Armenia & The Armenians

OTTOMAN RULE

After the death of the Mongol leader Tamerlane in 1405, Armenia was divided between the Ottoman Turkish Empire and Persia.

By the year 1515 most of Ancient Armenia was overrun by Sultan Slim and the bulk of the Armenians were thus placed under Turkish rule.

In 1827-28 north-eastern Armenia was ceded by Persia to Russia, thereby becoming a Russian province. Following the Russo-Turkish war of 1878, Armenia was partitioned into what is generally known as Turkish Armenia and Russian Armenia, only a proportion of the latter being the existing Republic Of Armenia today.
